Block 7 — How to Teach So That Behavior Doesn’t Disappear the Next Day

✓ By this point, parents have been in the “8 Blocks” program for more than six months. They have already seen positive results, their child’s behavior has improved, and most likely their child has learned some new skills. ✓ But every participant has also experienced situations where undesirable behavior returned, or newly learned skills seemed to disappear. To make sure changes last, we need to practice lessons in different settings, with different people, and under a variety of conditions. ✓ The environment surrounding the child at the moment they are expected to demonstrate a new skill can either prevent that behavior or trigger it. ✓ Instructors help parents identify what needs to be added to lessons so that skills don’t vanish as soon as the session ends. Parents also review teaching methods from Block 4 that support learning new skills in natural settings: incidental teaching, visual schedules, social stories, behavioral momentum, and errorless learning.
